Who Should Hire an Interior Designer?

I’ll be honest. Interior designers aren’t for everyone.

For years and years, I cut my own hair. I couldn’t see the difference between a $90 professional wash, cut and blow-out and the 30 second snip-snip I gave myself in the mirror after my bi-weekly sudsing with drug store shampoo and conditioner.

This was, in-part, because I was pretty good at cutting/styling my own hair and partly because it just wasn’t a priority for me at that point in my life. Occasionally, I found myself in a stylist chair, cape over my shoulders so they could snip away my split ends, but ten minutes later and $30 poorer (I know, I know…big spender!), I found myself resenting my stylist and myself for the waste of time and money. It wasn’t that she did a bad job, it was that I didn’t value the service she provided at that time. I had different priorities for my time and money..

Fast forward to present: Today, I pay a professional to cut and highlight my hair. My stylist provides a service to me that I wouldn’t be able to provide myself. I feel great about my hair, and look at our time together as an investment in myself as a woman and as a professional.

Stunning space by Colin King Studios utilizes color, texture, line to create a space that is both bright and moody at the same time.

There are those people for whom a home is just a house: four walls and a roof to keep out the elements. These people do not need a designer. There are those who wince at the thought of paying for design, and maybe a designer isn’t right for them at this time.

Others, though, love the feeling of being in a polished space. They find value in just the right pieces, colors, and textures coming together to tailor-make a room optimized for their lives. They find value in living in a place of beauty.

That’s who interior designers are for.

If you see your home as an extension of yourself–if you see it as a place that should be custom-fit to the life you wish to live–then an interior designer is for you. We have the education, experience, and training to elevate a space into something cohesive and personal.

If you don’t feel at home in your space, if you have trouble wrapping your head around the infinite options available, if you don’t know when and where to spend your money and where to save, maybe you should consider the services of a professional interior designer. We take on the burden of combing through websites and warehouses, narrowing down the results from “items 1-99 of 52,376 matching items” to one.

Others, still, have learned the hard way. They bought that sectional that overwhelmed their room, or they spent weeks shopping for exactly the right coffee table only to get it home and realize it just isn’t what they expected it to be. These people have put in time, money, tears–and are no further ahead than when they started.

In any case, if you find yourself dreaming of a home you are proud of, combing through Pinterest in awe of what others have been able to achieve, or are simply tired of wasting money on pieces that are poor quality, or just plain wrong for your space, maybe it is time to start the process of hiring a professional.
